Transforming Anxiety

Have you experienced the crippling grip of anxiety?

That overwhelming feeling of stress that tightens your chest restricts your breathing and weighs on your mind.

Today’s reflection is about about transforming anxiety. So what is this energy that holds us in its anxious grip?

What causes that tightness and discomfort?

For me, I discovered that when I’m feeling this way, I’ll tune into it.

I try to understand what’s going on for me.

So internally I feel very tight and tense in the chest, but energetically it’s tied to something external. Things I’m trying to achieve or get done. These external tasks create internal pressure, and that pressure often comes back to fear.

It’s about stepping beyond the confines of what I know. Wishing myself into space as well, where I feel like I have to stretch my anxiety. My overwhelm and my stress are tied to that “To Do List” of things I’m aiming to achieve.

So when I recognise this I can bring it back into focus. I know I’m pushing a boundary. But what about your overwhelm? Do you feel it? Are you pushing a boundary or does it feel like it’s coming from somewhere else? Often anxiety is linked to stepping outside of our comfort zone, and it’s important to understand that practicing being outside of your comfort zone will help to desensitize the fear. Now I’m not Suggesting that if you have a crippling or chronic anxiety, you should just push through it alone. If you need extra support, seek it out. But ultimately, your anxiety. Stress and overwhelm are trying to tell you something! Trying to communicate with you. It’s your nervous system letting you know something doesn’t feel right or it feels different. And maybe there are fears behind those feelings, and they’re rooted in real situations from your life.

But as we know, sometimes the fear can take on a life of its own. And a small trigger can set it off, spiraling you into overwhelm. Now when this happens, it’s about coming back into your body. This anxiety and overwhelm its a feeling that’s external to you and it can pull, you can pull that energy back in and ask yourself, what’s the fear? Where’s it coming from? What was the thing that I needed to do that really set it off? What was the thing, when did it happen?

So identifying the source, it might not always be easy. And it does take practice, just like building muscles at the gym. But if you practice your technique. You will strengthen. The ability to overcome it and understand it better.

So being mindful of your of your thoughts and your feelings, you can retrain your brain to return to this balance state without letting the anxiety take over. Now this is a process.
